The Department of Botany at Sri Aurobindo College, University of Delhi, was established in 1992 as a vital part of the B.Sc. Life Sciences programme. Since its inception, the department has been committed to providing high-quality education in plant sciences through a perfect blend of classroom teaching, laboratory training, and field-based learning.
With a team of dedicated faculty, well-equipped laboratories, and a focus on skill development and research, the department prepares students to meet the evolving challenges in the fields of biotechnology, environmental science, and agriculture. Whether it's cultivating mushrooms, preparing vermicompost, or visiting biotech industries, students are constantly engaged in hands-on activities that extend learning beyond textbooks.
We are dedicated to cultivating adept plant scientists through a rich blend of classroom learning, hands-on laboratory experience, and immersive field engagement. Our programs are meticulously designed to nurture critical thinking, research acumen, and real-world problem-solving skills.
Nestled on the ground floor of our modern Block, our department boasts spacious, well-equipped teaching laboratories—furnished with advanced instruments and dedicated computer resources—to support practical learning and experimentation.
We champion learning that goes far beyond theory:
Our department instils scientific curiosity, environmental stewardship, and an entrepreneurial mindset in every student. We bolster practical innovation through schemes like the DU-funded Innovation Project (SAC 206), encouraging students to explore and experiment.

One of the most vibrant and creative wings of the department is its official student-led society, Aaranyam.
Aaranyam acts as a platform where science meets creativity. The society encourages students to explore and document the biodiversity of the college campus, resulting in the successful compilation and publication of a college flora magazine — featuring plant information, scientific articles, poems, and artwork contributed by students.
The society also promotes eco-consciousness through workshops, awareness campaigns, herbal garden tours, and exhibitions that blend knowledge with social responsibility. Aaranyam inspires students to engage deeply with plant life not only in the laboratory but also in nature and the community.
“Aaranyam is not just a society, it’s a green movement within the campus — built by students, led by students, and grown with passion.”
