About the Department

The Department of History at Sri Aurobindo College has been an integral part of the institution since its very inception in 1972. In the same year, Dr.Javinder Singh joined as one of the founding faculty members, laying the foundation for a tradition of committed teaching and scholarship. Initially introduced as one of the five disciplines in the B.A. (Pass) course, the subject has since evolved with the changing academic framework and is now offered in the form of B.A. (Honours) History and B.A. Programme.

The department is guided by a dedicated team of faculty members specializing in diverse areas of historical study, ranging from ancient, medieval, and modern Indian history to world history, historiography, and cultural studies. This diversity of expertise allows the department to provide students with a holistic and multidisciplinary understanding of the past and its continuing relevance in shaping contemporary society.

The teaching methodology combines classroom lectures, discussions, and assignments with exposure to field visits, heritage walks, seminars, and workshops, which help students connect theoretical knowledge with practical insights. The department also encourages critical thinking, analytical skills, and research orientation, preparing students for a wide spectrum of career opportunities in academia, civil services, journalism, law, archaeology, heritage management, and public policy.

With its commitment to academic excellence and holistic student development, the Department of History continues to nurture inquisitive minds and shape responsible citizens who appreciate the richness of the past while engaging meaningfully with the challenges of the present.
