About the Department

The Department of Environmental Science was established in the year 2014 to actively work towards integrating environmental sustainability ideas and concepts into undergraduate programs. The department was founded to cater to the curriculum requirements and is currently offering AEC-Environmental Science: Theory into Practice and SEC-Skill Enhancement Course papers to the undergraduate students of all courses.

The department has worked incessantly towards sustainable ethics and knowledge sharing through classroom teaching and beyond to not only enhance the knowledge on environmental concerns but also to seek credible solutions.

Vision

Its vision is to be a centre of excellence in imparting environmental knowledge and research at regional and national levels.

Objectives

Our mission is to disseminate knowledge through excellent instruction and research to address the pertinent environmental concerns humanity is facing, with a particular emphasis on current national requirements.

  • Environmental education develops concepts about the environment, its scopes and importance.
  • Envisions to create awareness about a variety of environmental issues and concerns.
  • To provide a clear understanding of the natural resources: their availability, limitations and degradation.
  • To make a pro-environmental attitude amongst the students to lead a sustainable lifestyle.
  • To create knowledge about the values of biodiversity, their threats and conservation plans.
  • To enhance the knowledge of the students regarding environmental laws and constitutional rights of the individuals pertaining to any environmental issues or concerns.

Departmental Council: “Prithvi-Society for Environment”

Prithvi is an Environmental Society, established under the aegis of the Department of Environmental Science, at Sri Aurobindo College, University of Delhi. Its mission is to promote environmental awareness and aspire action towards conservation through various activities, collaborations and initiatives, Prithvi engages students and the community, thereby fostering responsibility and sustainable practices. The society is dedicated to contributing to a greener and more sustainable future.

A variety of enriching initiatives and student-centric approaches are adopted by the department to actively develop a comprehensive academic environment.

An annual premier event that includes expert discussions, lecture series, and a range of intercollegiate contests aimed at encouraging creativity and intellectual interaction. The festival offers a platform to showcase their skills, network with classmates from different institutes and assume leadership positions by organizing and directing the event.

To promote experiential learning scopes and opportunities, educational visits are organised. Thus, broadening their horizons and understanding on local environmental issues and solutions beyond classroom teachings. These visits allow the students to have a hands-on experience in understanding the real situation at the ground level and seeking solution and knowledge apart from classroom teachings.

The department along with the society’s collaboration publishes e-newsletter on the current trends in environment and research. The platform deliberates the students to study and develop the scientific and journaling temperament, also honing their creative skills,

As a part of curriculum, students are encouraged to work in teams and submit their reports in an organised way. This process encourages teamwork, deeper understanding and thinking, writing proficiency, thereby making them future ready for research and reporting assignments.

Cinematic study and interaction with a variety of environmental concerns are fostered by curated screenings and conversations. To enhance students' knowledge outside of the classroom, films are chosen to support academic material and also develop their interest and perspectives on various burning issues.

Regular seminars and lecture series are conducted where renowned personalities and academicians deliver talks on pertinent topics, thus igniting the young minds.

Collaboration with various organisations like WWF and NGOs are developed to work towards common goal of conservation, sensitization and sustainability. Summer internships were pursued in those renowned organisations.

The department also act as a centre for career development to its students either for higher education or for job opportunities. The faculty members are also associated with mentoring various projects in collaboration with other institutions like IGNOU etc. thus reinforcing their connections and helping in choosing the career options.

Project Aves is a project and club to study the birds of Delhi NCR and instil the importance of ornithology and environment. It harbours the habit of birdwatching amongst the students, volunteers and faculty members. It endeavours the following objectives:

  • Bird watching and Species Identification of Delhi NCRs
  • To make eco-friendly bird feeders, primarily from recycled materials, to provide
  • Food and water to birds.
  • Installing handmade nests across campus and nearby areas
  • Plant native trees and shrubs that offer shade, fruits, and nesting places.
