About the Department

Established in 1972, the Department of Commerce is one of the oldest and most prestigious departments at Sri Aurobindo College. It offers three academic programs—B.Com. (Hons.), B.Com., and B.A. in Commerce—each designed to foster a vibrant and engaging learning environment. The department is committed to addressing the challenges of the 21st century through innovative pedagogical approaches, in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) guidelines. Emphasizing holistic development, students benefit from a wide range of co-curricular and extracurricular activities including expert talks, workshops, panel discussions, outstation educational trips, and the annual commerce festival, TRGOVINA. With a dynamic team of 38 dedicated faculty members, the department continues to shape future-ready professionals equipped to thrive in a rapidly evolving business landscape.

AAKRAYA – The Commerce Association

The department proudly hosts Aakraya, its vibrant student-led Commerce Association, established in 2012. Aakraya champions the spirit of academic excellence, leadership, and collaboration. It serves as a launchpad for ambitious students, offering exclusive opportunities for exposure, networking, and skill development. Its flagship event, TRGOVINA, launched in 2017–18, has emerged as one of the most anticipated inter-college commerce fests, drawing participation from top institutions like SRCC and LSR. The fest features high-energy events such as Mock Stock, Shark Tank, and the IPL Gala, where creativity meets competition.

Beyond the fest, Aakraya organizes expert sessions with industry stalwarts like Mr. Anil Swarup (former Coal Secretary of India), webinars, panel discussions, and industrial field visits to companies like Parle and Yakult. These initiatives aim to bridge academic learning with real-world business exposure, making Aakraya a cornerstone of the department’s commitment to student excellence.

Departmental Activities

The Commerce Department of Sri Aurobindo College showcased an eventful and academically enriching year in 2024-25 through a diverse range of programs. Highlights include impactful webinars such as "Cyber Threats, Slavery and Felony" by Prof. Sunaina Kanojia and "Decodifying Budget 2024" by CA Saurabh Agarwal. A hands-on workshop on "Business Statistics using Spreadsheets" was conducted by Prof. Arun Julka, enhancing practical skills among 150+ participants. The department also hosted an eight-day National Orientation and Sensitization Programme on NEP 2020, featuring experts like Prof. Bishnu Mohan Das, Prof. C.B. Sharma, and Prof. S.P. Aggarwal, focusing on inclusive education, Indian Knowledge Systems, stress management, and innovative pedagogy.

In December, the department co-organized a week-long Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on “Business Analytics and Research Methodology” with Ramanujan College under the UGC-MMTTP scheme. Sessions covered tools like R, Excel, Tableau, and Power BI, and explored topics such as predictive analytics, research ethics, scaling, sampling, and case study writing. The FDP drew experts from across India and provided hands-on exposure to cutting-edge tools and research frameworks. These initiatives reflect the department's commitment to academic excellence, research orientation, and skill development aligned with the objectives of NEP 2020.
